GENERAL PRACTICE JOBS IN AUSTRALIA AND NEW ZEALAND
General Practice (also known as Family Medicine) in Australia or New Zealand is a high demand specialty, with a huge range of both permanent and locum job options available for doctors. General Practitioners provide a full range of primary care services to patients in both countries, and in most settings would usually see around 30-40 patients in a standard FTE working day.
There are a range of practice styles, with small private facilities, Super Clinics, larger corporate practice networks and hospital settings. Some practices also provide procedural services such as obstetrics, minor surgery clinics or anaesthetics. Procedural GP roles are very common in rural and regional areas, and can attract generous rates for both locum and permanent work.
In a FTE role, GPs in Australia generally earn their income through Medicare rebates and private out-of-pocket fees at their practice on a fee-for-service basis, though salaried roles are sometimes offered. Locum roles are usually offered at a salaried daily or hourly rate.
In New Zealand a fully comprehensive publicly funded Primary Care system operates where most GPs will either be salaried, or employed on locum contracts where they will be offered hourly rates.
GPs in Australia and New Zealand have the opportunity to experience a huge range of caseloads, some unique to this part of the world.
